You may have heard of Showtime's small series called Borgia. It was created by Neil Jordan ("Cruel Game", "Interview with the Vampire") and is a description of the complete violence, sex and betrayal of the life of the most famous family of the 16th century. The Borgia family, led by Pontiff Alexander VI (in the world of Rodrigo Borgia), eliminates everyone who stands in their way to power over Europe.
3. The Tudors “The Tudors” (2007-2010)
Movie Search Rating: 8.0
IMDb Rating: 8.1
The history of the reign of Henry VIII, when he was not yet obese and bearded. Despite some historical “mistakes” (Henry was actually red-haired, the king’s sister was called Mary, not Margaret, Henry Fitzroy died 17 years of age, and not at the age of 6-7, etc.), the series makes an excellent work, showing the interaction of passions and politics, luxurious costumes, palace interiors, and the captivating atmosphere of palace intrigues. For all this, the "Tudors" and hit the top 3 best historical series.
2. Deadwood “Deadwood” (2004-2006)
Movie Search Rating: 8.1
IMDb Rating: 8.8
David Milch’s historical drama takes us to the rural area of South Dakota in 1870. Although the series consists of only three seasons, he managed to show how a small gold digger camp called Deadwood is gradually turning into a city. And all this is in the harsh realities of the Wild West, when the killings were as routine as, say, drinking in the saloon. Although the case took place at the end of the 19th century, Milch did not include foul language in the series; instead, the heroes say "Curse!" and "you go!".
In "Deadwood" you will not find handsome and sleek handsome men portraying noble cowboys and no less noble Indians. This series is for those who want to see without embellishment how the country that is now called the United States of America arose. Unsanitary conditions and illnesses, deaths and blood, brothels and a gold rush, and all this is seasoned with good irony.
1. Rome "Rome" (2005-2007 gg.)
Movie Search Rating: 8.5
IMDb Rating: 8.9
Headed the best historical series of foreign production. The collaboration between HBO and the BBC has been extremely fruitful. It allowed us to combine HBO's penchant for harsh and uncompromising drama with the BBC's habit of carefully checking the facts that will be shown on TV shows and attracting a star acting team for the shoot. It is unlikely that any other series would have been able to so brilliantly, in detail, and most importantly - realistically show the transformation of Rome from a republic to an empire, to win a high rating of viewers.
The 2-season series shows the rise of Julius Caesar and the effect he has on the citizens of Rome as a whole. The lustful sexual manners of the ancient period are perfectly depicted. “Rome” is worth watching for those who want to learn about the greedy, cruel, depraved, but at the same time, bright and interesting life of the Eternal City, shown by the eyes of ordinary citizens (two main characters - Lucius Voren and Titus Pulion).
